It was a tough day for Dominic Thiem on Sunday.

The two-time Roland Garros finalist struggled against Pablo Andujar in the opening round in Paris, a tournament that the Austrian typically does very well in. The loss stings even more because the No. 4 seed won the first two sets, but could not finish off Andujar who bounced back to a 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

On Instagram, Thiem wrote a heartfelt message to his fans.

“Hey everybody! It´s tough to digest yesterday’s early loss at one of my favorite tournaments! To be honest – it was just not good enough! Some percents are missing in every part of my game...Thanks a lot for all the support – it means the world to me, especially in tough times like these,” he shared.

Thiem reached back-to-back French Open semifinals in 2016 and 2017 and then back-to-back finals in 2018 and 2019, losing to Rafael Nadal both times.

Although the world No. 4 reached the last four in Madrid, he's struggled both mentally and physically on the court for the majority of 2021. Coming into Paris' major event, he was disappointed with his performance in Lyon. Thiem fell to Cameron Norrie, 6-3, 6-2, in the opening round of the ATP 250 event, but it seemed he was ready to get back to work in Paris.

However, his efforts weren't great enough to overcome the Spaniard and it resulted in him falling in Round 1 for the first time at Paris' major tournament.
