Game, Set, Bet: Why Tommy Paul's odds are worth it at Indian Wells

Is Frances Tiafoe saying, "Go Birds!" at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden? Sort of, thanks to Tommy Paul.

The No. 14 seed hit the practice court on Day 1 of the ATP Masters 1000 event of Wednesday, and in between hugging it out with Donna Vekic and Pam Shriver, the two-time US Open semifinalist was also sporting a head-scratching accessory: a Philadelphia Eagles cap, the fierce rivals of his favored Washington Commanders.

Though the cap paired nicely with his green Lululemon practice gear and Yonex tennis bag, Tiafoe was quick to tell fans that his NFL loyalties haven't changed a bit with a short post on X, formerly Twitter.

"Commanders fan for life," he wrote. "Lost a bet to Tommy Paul."

While it's unclear just what the bet was, it's no secret that Paul, a native of Voorhees Township, N.J., is one of the tour's biggest Eagles fans, and has been reveling in his favorite team's most recent Super Bowl after the Birds triumphed over the Kansas City Chief last month. (They beat Tiafoe's Commanders along the way, in the NFC championship game, in a performance that Paul dubbed the best sporting event he'd ever attended.)

In the days leading up to the big game, Paul wore an Eagles cap throughout his time competing at the Dallas Open, which is played at The Star, the world headquarters and practice facility of the Eagles' chief rival Dallas Cowboys.

And perhaps fittingly, Tiafoe could get revenge on behalf of his Commanders in the penultimate round of one of the biggest events on the tennis calendar this year if both he and Paul advance deep into the second week.

No. 10 seed Paul's first match in Tennis Paradise will be against wild card Tristan Boyer, while No. 16 seed Tiafoe has a date with Bosnian qualifier Damir Dzumhur.
