Player of the day: Zarazua makes history in Paris

Each day of Roland Garros Baseline will highlight one player's efforts for a job well done.

Renata Zarazua made history on Monday by becoming the first Mexican woman in 20 years to reach the second round at Roland Garros. On Court 9, Zarazua dominated wild card Elsa Jacquemot, 6-1, 6-2, to secure her first Grand Slam win.

The 22-year-old rallied her way through three tough qualifying rounds to reach this point and now the Mexican player will vie for a spot in the tournament's third round. However, she will face Roland Garros' No. 3 seed Elina Svitolina, who has reached the last eight on two occasions in Paris.

“It means a lot, I think it’s not only a win, I think it means more than that," Zarazua told press. "I’m living a dream here in Paris and I just want to enjoy every match and every opportunity from being here this week.”

The world No. 178 is also the first Mexican woman to step foot in the main draw of a major event since Angelica Gavaldon in Melbourne in 2000.

Earlier this year, the Mexico City native found herself in the semifinals of Acapulco, defeating Grand Slam champion Sloane Stephens along the way. She also reached the final round of an ITF event in Prague earlier this month.
