Sabine Lisicki promises 'one more comeback' after announcing pregnancy

Eleven years ago, Sabine Lisicki was playing for the women's singles title at Wimbledon. Now, after a litany of injuries that sidelined her for bursts of time since then, the 34-year-old German is promising "one more comeback" after announcing her pregnancy.

"Life is full of unexpected surprises," Lisicki wrote in an Instagram post Friday, though it was not immediately clear when she's expected to give birth. "My fiancé and I are looking forward to this exciting journey."

In 2023, Lisicki won her first title of any kind in nine years when she triumphed at the ITF W60 event in Calgary, Canada in November. That came about a year after she spent 18 months on the sidelines as a result of her second major knee injury, having torn her ACL at the 2020 WTA event in Linz.

A former world No. 12 in 2012 who owns four career WTA titles, Lisicki had previously been sidelined at points in her career by a pair of ankle injuries, a shoulder problem, and mononucleosis.

Lisicki wrote on social media after winning in Canada last year that holding a trophy again felt "surreal."

"The odds to be playing professional tennis again were so slim yet here we are winning the title," she said.

The one-time record-holder for the fastest serve on the WTA tour at 131 mph, Lisicki's last WTA-level victory came in 2022, when she reached the quarterfinals of the grass-court event in Bad Homburg, and last year, she qualified for the WTA 500 in Charleston—a title she won in 2009.

The German is currently ranked No. 374.
