Ons Jabeur took a high-stakes moment in her Ningbo Open quarterfinal to inspire some of her best tennis against Vera Zvonareva on Thursday. As the former world No. 2 served for the opening set, Zvonareva was ultimately undone by a bit of Jabeur’s inimitable ingenuity: a tweener that helped her turn around the set and match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

“I just kept playing point by point,” the top seed explained on court. “It was just one break so I was trying to stay focused and get back in it. I’m really glad that I could fight back in the first set.”

Jabeur posted the video on Twitter/X following the three-set victory with the caption, “Tweenering into the semis,” punctuated with a surfer-girl emoji.

The three-time Grand Slam runner-up has been in search of that joie de vivre since enduring a heartbreaking loss in the finals of Wimbledon back in July. Though she reached the second week of the US Open, an upper respiratory illness hampered her play despite three wins in Flushing Meadows, and the Jabeur had won only one match since leaving New York.

Into her first semifinal since Wimbledon, Jabeur now awaits the winner of the final last-eight match between Katerina Siniakova and Nadia Podoroska.
