Last year, injury woes kept Karolina Muchova out until June.

It was a tough blow, as the 2023 French Open finalist missed the European clay season and ultimately a return to Roland Garros.

On Thursday, Muchova was due to make her 2025 clay-court debut. But the No. 12 seed was forced to pull out from the Mutua Madrid Open ahead of her second-round meeting with qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva.

“Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from Madrid due to illness,” Muchova shared on her Instagram story. “Not the update I was hoping to share, but I’ll be back on court soon.”

With the unfortunate setback, the 28-year-old missed a prime opportunity to bolster—or at least cement—her ranking ahead of the season’s second major. The 12th-ranked Muchova will have another opportunity to improve her Paris seeding at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, the second of consecutive WTA 1000 events.

Muchova is currently the Czech No. 1. Countrywoman Barbora Krejcikova, last year’s Wimbledon champion and the 2021 French Open title holder, is yet to compete this season due to an ongoing back issue.
