UPSET ALERT: Sorana Cirstea knocks out No. 8 seed Emma Navarro for last spot in Dubai quarterfinals

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Preview

With a couple of different ball bounces, this match would be featuring two different players. On Wednesday, Muchova prevailed over McCartney Kessler 7-5 in the third set, after the American served for the match. Later that day, Cirstea prevailed over another American, Emma Navarro, in a see-saw marathon that also ended 7-5 in the third. Just for good measure, Cirstea had survived yet another three-setter earlier in the day.

Which means that while Muchova may be tired, Cirstea, who finished the last of her six sets close to midnight, will almost certainly be wearier. It won’t help Cirstea that she’s 1-4 against the Czech, and currently ranked 72 spots behind her (No. 17 to No. 89).

Of course, Cirstea is coming back from injury, and is a much better player than her ranking indicates. But Muchova’s shot variety gives her more options, which means she has more ways to make the Romanian do what she may not want to do much of on Thursday: run. Winner: MuchovaSteve Tignor
