TenniStory: Stan Wawrinka

Stanislas Wawrinka has withdrawn from next week's event in Gstaad following his first-round defeat in Bastad.

The 37-year-old three-time Grand Slam champion fell to Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets, and had come into the event 3-5 this season in his long comeback from double knee surgery.

That appears to have prompted him to withdraw from what is a home event in Switzerland, noting that he would not be competitive if he played.

"Even though I'm happy with the progress, I know that I'm still not where I want to be and where I need to be in order to compete and win consecutive matches at the highest level," Wawrinka said on social media.

Though adding he only wanted to return "when I feel that I can properly compete," Wawrinka said he plans to play the "U.S. swing" but did not specify his next tournament.

"I will keep working hard for the rest of the season," he said.

Wawrinka is No. 270 in the rankings.
