WTA Weekend Winners: Barbora Krejcikova can't seem to lose, Tamara Zidansek completes comeback in Switzerland

It’s safe to say Barbora Krejcikova is officially the frontrunner for the WTA’s Most Improved player award for 2021. The Czech, who defeated compatriot Tereza Martincova 6-2, 6-0, in an all-Czech final from Prague, is now 20-1 in her last 21 matches.

There’s no singular aspect of Krejcikova’s game that overwhelms the eye, but the sum of all her parts—consistency, shot-selection, clutch serving, and mental toughness—makes the 25-year-old one of the toughest outs on the WTA Tour.

After falling down 2-1 in the first set, Krejcikova reeled off 11 consecutive games, resulting in a dominant 62 percent of all points won, to go along with 24 clean winners. Her only loss in the last four tournaments came at the hands of Ash Barty in the Wimbledon fourth round. Krejcikova, who did not drop a set all week, will move up to No. 11 in the rankings on Monday.

In Lausanne, Switzerland, Tamara Zidansek was just two points from defeat at 5-5 in the second-set tiebreak before clawing back to defeat Clara Burel 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Zidansek dropped the first game of the third set before winning six straight to capture her first career WTA singles title.
